Episode 77: National Lampoon’s Vacation
Thursday Aug 18, 2022
Thursday Aug 18, 2022
As the summer winds down, we take one more trip down that holiday road with a look at the music of National Lampoon's Vacation! Clark Griswold's mission to drive his family to Walley World is one of the quintessential 80s comedies, with a ridiculously catchy theme song to boot!
Lindsey Buckingham's immortal earworm "Holiday Road" anchors a soundtrack that features the likes of June Pointer, Vanity 6, The Ramones and Nicolette Larson. Larson's song "Summer Hearts" doesn't actually appear in the film, but we discovered there's a very good reason for that.
So fasten your seatbelts and join us as we take this Family Truckster off road!

Friday Aug 05, 2022
Friday Aug 05, 2022
This week we pay tribute to the dearly departed Ray Liotta with his first feature film, Jonathan Demme's Something Wild! It's hard to pin down exactly what this film is. Is it a road trip comedy? Is it a romantic comedy? Is it a chase thriller? Instead, it somehow manages to be all of those things. It's extremely entertaining!
As for the soundtrack, we'll talk about a couple of the Talking Heads flying solo, we'll discuss the film's fascination with reggae and afrobeat, and we'll even reconnect with podcast favorites New Order and Oingo Boingo! So fasten your seatbelts, because you're in for Something Wild!

Thursday Jun 16, 2022
Thursday Jun 16, 2022
Sound the alarm! It's tornado season! On this episode we look at 1996's most ridiculous disaster: Twister!
This soundtrack features an even split of dad rock (Van Halen, Goo Goo Dolls, Soul Asylum) and mom rock (Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, Alison Krauss). It all adds up to an album that's more thoughtfully put together than the movie it's supporting. We also dive into a little bit of Joe's past weather-related trauma, information that some of us were not ready for... So strap yourselves in, because this episode will blow you away!

Episode 73: Spice World
Friday May 27, 2022
Friday May 27, 2022
In the late 90s, few groups were as massively popular as The Spice Girls. After their debut album took the world by storm, a feature film was the next logical step. 1997's Spice World is a whirlwind comedy that finds the girls goofing on their own public image, driving around in a double-decker bus, evading the paparazzi, meeting space aliens, and (of course) performing some of their biggest hits!
Joining us this week is Quentin Harrison, author of "Record Redux: Spice Girls"! Quentin jumps in to help us break down the film and offers insights into what makes the group and their music so beloved.

Episode 72: Orange County
Thursday May 05, 2022
Thursday May 05, 2022
School's out for summer and it's time to start thinking about college... This week's film, Orange County, is all about two things: One kid's obsessive mission to get into Stanford University, and the bright and sunny atmosphere of early-2000s SoCal pop-punk!
The soundtrack brings us radio singles from The Offspring and Foo Fighters (RIP Taylor Hawkins), as well as classic tracks from Californians Brian Wilson, Social Distortion, Phantom Planet, and... Yeah I guess we'll have to talk about Crazy Town too.
What this episode is really about is a chance for our hosts to reminisce about their high school careers, the things that pushed them to become writers, and the yearning for something greater than themselves. That's something we can all relate to, right?

Episode 71: Dirty Dancing
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
It's our annual Oscar Special, and this week we're finally ready to tackle one of the most wildly successful movie soundtracks of all time. That's right, this show is all about Dirty Dancing! It's hit single, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the competition wasn't even close. We'll get into that, and how the song very nearly didn't even happen!
Join us as we dig into that one, as well as classic hits like "Hungry Eyes" and "She's Like The Wind", marvel at the sheer pop perfection of The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and Bruce Channel's "Hey! Baby", and ponder the dissonance of album cuts from Tom Johnston, Zappacosta and The Blow Monkeys. So practice those lifts and let's hit the dance floor!

Thursday Mar 10, 2022
One good Mike Myers turn deserves another, right? How about three? This week we're tackling all three Austin Powers soundtracks! From lounge revival kick of International Man of Mystery, to the pop phenomenon The Spy Who Shagged Me and finally to the 70s brand extension of Goldmember, we have a LOT of ground to cover on this episode.
Burt Bacharach and Susanna Hoffs are two of this episode's key players. We'll hear from them several times. But not to be outdone, we've got bangers from Madonna, The Cardigans, The Lightning Seeds, They Might Be Giants, and more! And no conversation of Austin Powers would be complete without Quincy Jones' iconic "Soul Bossa Nova"!
The series spans 1997 to 2002, five short years in which the alt rock scene collapsed and made way for hip-hop. So put on your velvet suits and mix up some martinis, baby! This episode's gonna get groovy!
