Episode 28: Dumb and Dumber
Jan 23, 2020
Jan 23, 2020
1hr 18 min
Saddle up, partners! This week we're piling into the old sheepdog-mobile as we discuss the soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber! 1994 was Jim Carrey's breakout year, and this film solidified him as a comedy force to be reckoned with. It's also wildly problematic and many of the jokes have not aged well. C'est la vie.
However... The soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber is secretly brilliant! It features an all-time classic cover from Crash Test Dummies, as well as some true jangle-pop bangers from Pete Droge, The Sons and The Gigolo Aunts. We've also got Echobelly, The Proclaimers, and whatever the hell it is Green Jelly thinks they're doing... It's another fascinating snapshot of the rock-pop landscape of the mid-nineties.So join us as we embark on a multi-part journey through the soundtracks of the Farrelly Brothers!

Happy New Year, party pals! This week, Discord & Rhyme co-host and Weird Al Superfan Rich Bunnell joins us to discuss the soundtrack to Weird Al Yankovic's UHF!
Released in the summer of 1989, UHF got lost in the shuffle of one of the biggest blockbuster seasons ever. The film may have been overshadowed by the likes of Batman and Indiana Jones, but time has been kind to UHF. Many today consider it a cult classic, and also one of the stranger albums in Weird Al's catalog.
In addition to the songs from the film, we also have tunes about classic TV shows, the requisite polka medley, and also one of the greatest odes to Americana ever written. It's true! So fix yourself a twinkie weiner sandwich, crank up the volume and yank off the knob as we dig into everything U-62 has to offer!

Episode 25: Actors Rocking Badly
Dec 12, 2019
Dec 12, 2019
57 min
On this edition of our On The 5's series, Libby takes us into the dark underbelly of fame, where actors decide it's time to strap on the guitar and play rock star for an album or two. That's right, this episode is dedicated to rock songs from some of your actors! Y'know, provided your favorite actors are Bruce Willis, Kevin Bacon and...*checks notes* Stephen King? He acts sometimes, right?
Look, no one ever said the job would be easy, but we torture ourselves so you don't have to. Which is a lie, because if you know how this show works then you know you're definitely in for some auditory madness. But we know you can handle it, because you're a trooper and that's why we love you.

Episode 23: The Color of Money
Nov 14, 2019
Nov 14, 2019
1hr 24 min
Martin Scorsese recently called comic book movies "theme park rides" and the internet had a collective meltdown over it. Coupled with the release of his latest film, The Irishman, now seems like a pretty good time to discuss a Scorsese film! Join us this week as we dig into 1986's THE COLOR OF MONEY!
The Color of Money follows retired pool hustler Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) taking a young hotshot named Vince (Tom Cruise) under his wing. With Vince's girlfriend Carmen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) in tow, they hit the road for a 9-ball tournament in Atlantic City.
Produced by The Band's Robbie Robertson, the soundtrack features classic rock mainstays like Eric Clapton, Robert Palmer and B.B. King. Oh, and there's also a little ditty by one Warren Zevon. Perhaps you've heard it? Also in this episode, Joe and Libby find themselves hopelessly addicted to pitching bigger and better sequels to this film, because that's just the world we live in now. It's a wild ride, so hop in and let's roll!

Episode 22: Forbidden Zone

1hr 37 sec
Happy Halloween, party people!
Join us on a strange and spooky journey to the Sixth Dimension as we discuss the soundtrack to FORBIDDEN ZONE!
In the early 80s, Richard and Danny Elfman were straining to break free of the musical theatre circuit. Richard devised Forbidden Zone as a showcase for Danny's band, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, as well as a means of breaking into the film industry. The result is a wild pastiche of Vaudeville, stagecraft, animation and big band music produced completely outside the realms of studio filmmaking and any semblance of good taste.
The soundtrack features tons of music from Oingo Boingo, as well as pieces cribbed from Cab Calloway, Freddy Martin and...er...The Three Stooges. It's a wicked blast of camp from start to finish, and we discuss it warts and all!

It's time to get spoooooky! Join us this week as we slide into the Halloween spirit with the soundtrack to SHAUN OF THE DEAD! Not only is Edgar Wright's 2004 debut one of the greatest horror comedies of all time, the soundtrack is a rip-roaring ride through 80s power pop classics, hip-hop and electro beats, a couple of Queen songs, and all points in between.Wright is one of the last filmmakers standing who truly cares about curating a quality pop soundtrack, so this is definitely not the last we'll hear of him on this podcast. In this episode, we get into our favorite Queen songs, the implied history between Shaun and Liz, and how much it hurts to see vinyl destroyed...
