Episode 73: Spice World
Friday May 27, 2022
Friday May 27, 2022
In the late 90s, few groups were as massively popular as The Spice Girls. After their debut album took the world by storm, a feature film was the next logical step. 1997's Spice World is a whirlwind comedy that finds the girls goofing on their own public image, driving around in a double-decker bus, evading the paparazzi, meeting space aliens, and (of course) performing some of their biggest hits!
Joining us this week is Quentin Harrison, author of "Record Redux: Spice Girls"! Quentin jumps in to help us break down the film and offers insights into what makes the group and their music so beloved.

Episode 72: Orange County
Thursday May 05, 2022
Thursday May 05, 2022
School's out for summer and it's time to start thinking about college... This week's film, Orange County, is all about two things: One kid's obsessive mission to get into Stanford University, and the bright and sunny atmosphere of early-2000s SoCal pop-punk!
The soundtrack brings us radio singles from The Offspring and Foo Fighters (RIP Taylor Hawkins), as well as classic tracks from Californians Brian Wilson, Social Distortion, Phantom Planet, and... Yeah I guess we'll have to talk about Crazy Town too.
What this episode is really about is a chance for our hosts to reminisce about their high school careers, the things that pushed them to become writers, and the yearning for something greater than themselves. That's something we can all relate to, right?

Episode 71: Dirty Dancing
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
It's our annual Oscar Special, and this week we're finally ready to tackle one of the most wildly successful movie soundtracks of all time. That's right, this show is all about Dirty Dancing! It's hit single, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the competition wasn't even close. We'll get into that, and how the song very nearly didn't even happen!
Join us as we dig into that one, as well as classic hits like "Hungry Eyes" and "She's Like The Wind", marvel at the sheer pop perfection of The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and Bruce Channel's "Hey! Baby", and ponder the dissonance of album cuts from Tom Johnston, Zappacosta and The Blow Monkeys. So practice those lifts and let's hit the dance floor!

Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
One good Mike Myers turn deserves another, right? How about three? This week we're tackling all three Austin Powers soundtracks! From lounge revival kick of International Man of Mystery, to the pop phenomenon The Spy Who Shagged Me and finally to the 70s brand extension of Goldmember, we have a LOT of ground to cover on this episode.
Burt Bacharach and Susanna Hoffs are two of this episode's key players. We'll hear from them several times. But not to be outdone, we've got bangers from Madonna, The Cardigans, The Lightning Seeds, They Might Be Giants, and more! And no conversation of Austin Powers would be complete without Quincy Jones' iconic "Soul Bossa Nova"!
The series spans 1997 to 2002, five short years in which the alt rock scene collapsed and made way for hip-hop. So put on your velvet suits and mix up some martinis, baby! This episode's gonna get groovy!

Episode 69: Wayne’s World
Friday Feb 04, 2022
Friday Feb 04, 2022
This week marks the 30th anniversary of Wayne's World! Not only was this movie spun off from the wildly popular sketches on Saturday Night Live, but Wayne's World was instrumental in reviving Queen's popularity with its iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence. It hit #1 on the Billboard charts for two straight weeks. It had video games, board games, halloween costumes, and even a roller coaster!
But for as big a deal as Wayne's World was, the soundtrack kinda fumbles the ball. We've got Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", naturally, but aside from the requisite Alice Cooper and Jimi Hendrix tracks, there's very little to recommend here. Tia Carrere gets to perform a couple of decent cover tunes, but that's about it. You wanna hear about Rhino Bucket? Or BulletBoys? Then this is the podcast for you. Party on!
SHOW NOTES:
Wayne's World is available to stream here!
Wayne Campbell's first TV appearance
Mike Myers in the film Bohemian Rhapsody
MUSIC VIDEOS:
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen
"Hot and Bothered" by Cinderella
"Ballroom Blitz" by Tia Carrere
"Feed My Frankenstein" by Alice Cooper

Episode 68: Vision Quest
Friday Jan 21, 2022
Friday Jan 21, 2022
This week's episode is brought to you by an unquenchable thirst for 80s teen romance of the worst kind. 1985's Vision Quest follows Matthew Modine as a high school senior training for the big wrestling match while also lusting after Linda Fiorentino, the drifter who somehow winds up living in his house. It's an after-school special about eating disorders that thinks it's a profound, Salinger-esque statement on growing up.
But don't let that fool you, because the soundtrack is stacked with hits!
We get radio rock hits from Journey, Foreigner and Sammy Hagar. We get a pair of dance-pop hits courtesy of Madonna. Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe", Ronnie James Dio, The Style Council and more! So strap on your rubber tracksuit and join us for one hell of a workout!

Episode 67: Ghostbusters II
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Happy New Year! We kick off 2022 with a bona fide New Year's movie: Ghostbusters II! The gang returns to fight an evil spirit trapped in a painting who wants to kidnap and inhabit a baby on New Year's Eve. It's an extremely silly film, but the soundtrack is almost wall to wall bangers!
New Jack Swing was on the rise in a big way in 1989, and bolstered by singles from Bobby Brown and Run DMC, this soundtrack was one of the breakout hits of that summer. In addition, we get tracks from New Edition, Doug E. Fresh, Glenn Frey, and the requisite Oingo Boingo cut. And, for some reason, they dug up an Elton John B-side to fill out the album.
So fire up those proton packs and join us as we ring in the new year!
SHOW NOTES:
Ghostbusters II is available to stream here!
