Episode 58: Married To The Mob
Thursday Aug 05, 2021
Thursday Aug 05, 2021
When was the last time you thought about Married To The Mob? We're willing to bet it's been a minute! Married To The Mob follows Michelle Pfeiffer as widowed mob wife Angela, who moves to Manhattan to escape Tony, the mob boss who killed her husband. And she soon learns the hard way that once you're in, you're in for life...The soundtrack is an expertly curated grab bag of 80s new wave artists. We've got singles from Debbie Harry, Chris Isaak, Ziggy Marley and Sinead O'Connor, all specifically recorded for this album! There's also tracks from New Order, The Tom Tom Club, and The Feelies. And yes, this film features the first (but certainly not the last) cinematic use of Q. Lazzarus' "Goodbye Horses"...

Episode 57: Clueless
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
No movie put a stamp on the mid-90s quite like Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma", Clueless follows a year in the life of Beverly Hills teen Cher as she plays matchmaker to teacher and student alike (but not, like, at the same time).
And the soundtrack is the rare album that actually helps tell the story. With tracks from 90s mainstays Luscious Jackson, Coolio, Cracker, Smoking Popes and more, the Clueless soundtrack is full of angst, social satire, and just some really solid tunes. Also in this episode, we encounter more 90s glam rock covers, Libby reminisces about the clothes that got away, and we fall backwards into a new name for ska!

Episode 56: School of Rock

Thursday Jun 24, 2021
School may be out for summer, but the School of Rock is now in session! Aspiring rocker Jack Black cons his way into a teaching job and shows a bunch of 5th graders how to rock. Along the way, he teaches them the finer points of classic rock history, gives them some lessons about self respect, and winds up learning to be a responsible adult. It's all very sweet.
And the soundtrack is loaded with choice classic rock cuts! We've got The Doors! We've got Led Zeppelin! AC/DC, Cream, The Who, The Stooges! And we even get a couple of more modern cuts from The Darkness and The Black Keys. Get ready to take notes, because this will all be on the test!

This week's OST Party is dedicated to the long and storied tradition of Disney soundtrack songs! We've cherrypicked a few of our favorites from the Disney Vault worth discussing, as well as a couple of stinkers that should never see the light of day again.
One of the great things about Disney is that there really is something for everybody, and our selections range from Walt's era in the 40s and 50s, to modern classics from the 90s renaissance, and just about everything in between! So pop on those mouse ears and join us as we let our inner children run wild!SHOW NOTES:

Episode 54: Me, Myself & Irene
Thursday May 13, 2021
Thursday May 13, 2021
We've been threatening to do this for a while, and now it's finally here. This week we're discussing the soundtrack to 2000's Me, Myself & Irene. If you're not familiar, it's the film that closed out Jim Carrey's run of blockbuster 90s comedies with a resounding thud. Carrey plays Charlie, a mild-mannered cop with a split personality. He also plays Hank, Charlie's deranged alter ego. Renee Zellweger is here as well. The rest really isn't important.
And the soundtrack is equally split down the middle. Half the album's songs are your usual suspects of late-90s radio rock staples. The other half is a bizarre collection of Steely Dan songs covered by modern artists such as Wilco, Ivy, Ben Folds Five, and Smash Mouth. Yes, Smash Mouth is back and they're doing Steely Dan.
What did we ever do to deserve this?

Episode 53: True Stories
Thursday Apr 29, 2021
Thursday Apr 29, 2021
This week we dive into David Byrne's 1986 slice-of-life film True Stories! While on tour with Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense, Byrne concocted a feature film about a town where all sorts of tabloid headlines came true. It's silly, it's strange, and it's beautiful in its own way. There's truly nothing like it.
As for the album itself, Talking Heads deliver a handful of classic tunes, but we also get some wonderful instrumental pieces, as well as performances from John Goodman, Annie McEnroe, Tito Larriva, and more! And along the way, we find ourselves discussing the Church of the SubGenius, hijacking TouchTunes jukeboxes, and the never-ending march of progress.
So hop in your privately owned red convertible and join us on this wild, wild ride through the mind of David Byrne!

Episode 52: Empire Records
Thursday Apr 08, 2021
Thursday Apr 08, 2021
It's Rex Manning Day here at the OST Party, so this week we're joined by Johnny-5 from the Christmas Creeps podcast to discuss the soundtrack to Empire Records! In the grand tradition of 90s hangout comedies like Clerks and Dazed and Confused, this film chronicles a day in the life of a record store full of hormonal teens. Whether you love it or not entirely depends on if you saw this film as a hormonal teen...
This album comes from that moment in time when grunge was on the decline and a whole truckload of college rock and jangle pop acts swooped in to fill the void. Our much-discussed Gin Blossoms finally make an appearance on the show! We also get tracks from Edwyn Collins, The Cranberries, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, and more!

Episode 51: Daft Punk's Interstella 5555
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
Niall Flanagan and Dwayne Moloney from the Secret of the Sailor Madness podcast join us this week to break down Daft Punk's Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem!
French robot dance-pop duo Daft Punk released their album "Discovery" in 2001, and commissioned artist Leiji Matsumoto to create a companion feature film, telling the story of a rock band from outer space, kidnapped and molded into Earth's Next Big Thing. There's some commentary about the music industry and some wacky sci-fi spaceship action, but mostly it's Daft Punk's attempt to create the raddest laser light show imaginable.
So since Daft Punk has disbanded on the album's 20th anniversary, join us as we spin "Discovery" ONE MORE TI-IME!
