Episode 54: Me, Myself & Irene
Thursday May 13, 2021
Thursday May 13, 2021
We've been threatening to do this for a while, and now it's finally here. This week we're discussing the soundtrack to 2000's Me, Myself & Irene. If you're not familiar, it's the film that closed out Jim Carrey's run of blockbuster 90s comedies with a resounding thud. Carrey plays Charlie, a mild-mannered cop with a split personality. He also plays Hank, Charlie's deranged alter ego. Renee Zellweger is here as well. The rest really isn't important.
And the soundtrack is equally split down the middle. Half the album's songs are your usual suspects of late-90s radio rock staples. The other half is a bizarre collection of Steely Dan songs covered by modern artists such as Wilco, Ivy, Ben Folds Five, and Smash Mouth. Yes, Smash Mouth is back and they're doing Steely Dan.
What did we ever do to deserve this?

Episode 53: True Stories
Thursday Apr 29, 2021
Thursday Apr 29, 2021
This week we dive into David Byrne's 1986 slice-of-life film True Stories! While on tour with Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense, Byrne concocted a feature film about a town where all sorts of tabloid headlines came true. It's silly, it's strange, and it's beautiful in its own way. There's truly nothing like it.
As for the album itself, Talking Heads deliver a handful of classic tunes, but we also get some wonderful instrumental pieces, as well as performances from John Goodman, Annie McEnroe, Tito Larriva, and more! And along the way, we find ourselves discussing the Church of the SubGenius, hijacking TouchTunes jukeboxes, and the never-ending march of progress.
So hop in your privately owned red convertible and join us on this wild, wild ride through the mind of David Byrne!

Episode 52: Empire Records
Thursday Apr 08, 2021
Thursday Apr 08, 2021
It's Rex Manning Day here at the OST Party, so this week we're joined by Johnny-5 from the Christmas Creeps podcast to discuss the soundtrack to Empire Records! In the grand tradition of 90s hangout comedies like Clerks and Dazed and Confused, this film chronicles a day in the life of a record store full of hormonal teens. Whether you love it or not entirely depends on if you saw this film as a hormonal teen...
This album comes from that moment in time when grunge was on the decline and a whole truckload of college rock and jangle pop acts swooped in to fill the void. Our much-discussed Gin Blossoms finally make an appearance on the show! We also get tracks from Edwyn Collins, The Cranberries, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, and more!

Episode 51: Daft Punk's Interstella 5555
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
Niall Flanagan and Dwayne Moloney from the Secret of the Sailor Madness podcast join us this week to break down Daft Punk's Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem!
French robot dance-pop duo Daft Punk released their album "Discovery" in 2001, and commissioned artist Leiji Matsumoto to create a companion feature film, telling the story of a rock band from outer space, kidnapped and molded into Earth's Next Big Thing. There's some commentary about the music industry and some wacky sci-fi spaceship action, but mostly it's Daft Punk's attempt to create the raddest laser light show imaginable.
So since Daft Punk has disbanded on the album's 20th anniversary, join us as we spin "Discovery" ONE MORE TI-IME!

Episode 49: A Knight's Tale
Thursday Feb 11, 2021
Thursday Feb 11, 2021
This week we fire up the Wayback Machine for a trap to the middle ages, when jousting was the sport of choice and classic rock tunes were somehow all the rage. That's right, it's time for A Knight's Tale! And pinch hitting for Libby this week is Nikki Shermer!
This soundtrack is full of classic rock staples we all know by heart. We've got Queen, David Bowie, Thin Lizzy, Sly & The Family Stone, and a whole lot more. And in between we discuss medieval times, the dinner show Medieval Times, places you'd want to be stabbed, and whether or not this movie is based on a Spin Doctors song. (It's probably not, but it definitely is!)

Episode 47: Scrooged
Thursday Dec 31, 2020
Thursday Dec 31, 2020
Welcome back, folks! We may have missed Christmas, but as this week's film reminds us, it's never too late. Round up some leftover wassail, put on your new fuzzy slippers, and join us as we break down the soundtrack to Richard Donner's 1988 "Christmas Carol" riff Scrooged!
Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a jaded TV executive hellbent on producing the most tasteless Dickens adaptation ever seen. But he's soon visited by three spirits... You know how this one goes.
The soundtrack is not your traditional Christmas album. We get Natalie Cole and Miles Davis putting their spin on a couple holiday standards, but we also get wannabe holiday jams from Dan Hartman, Robbie Robertson and The New Voices of Freedom. And of course, there's the inescapable theme song from Annie Lennox and Al Green!
